I was asked to write an article on Spring Gardening in Florida. Being the Patriotic type who lives and breathes all things red, white and blue…and not having any horticulture capabilities whatsoever, all I could think of was a quote from Thomas Jefferson in November of 1787 when discussing the writing of the Constitution that went like this: “The Tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants…it is its natural manure
So what does this have to do with Florida and Spring? More than you might think.
This Spring, Florida has been inundated with anti-gun proposals. These are not being openly publicized, but are being reviewed and voted on as we speak. First, we have two assault weapon bills pending. These very loosely define an assault weapon to the point of making your childhood .22 illegal and banning any magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Overnight, law-abiding citizens will become criminals.
To the positive, there is also a bill pending to revoke the unconstitutional legislation that was put in place last year. This legislation included a minimal age of 21 to purchase any firearm…So if you are a single mom under 21 with a stalker, you are out of luck. Also included were red flag laws that allowed your firearms to be taken away without due process because of here-say. Background checks for Florida only also became subject to a ‘pending’ category that can keep law abiding citizens with no criminal record from purchasing a firearm. The bill to revoke these measures is HB6073 (formerly HB175).
So this spring, while you are weeding the garden, don’t forget to cultivate your rights and reach out to your elected officials…let them know where you stand as well as why it is important that you retain the right to defend yourself as is recognized by the US Constitution!
