Melissa’s First Class…Basic Firearms Use and Safety/Concealed Carry…

If you are considering the possibility of getting your Concealed Carry License, or if you already have your CCW, but feel like you need more knowledge, this class is perfect for you.

If you are considering the possibility of getting your Concealed Carry License, or if you already have your CCW, but feel like you need more knowledge, and you are a woman, this class is perfect for you.  If you are nervous, apprehensive, or scared of guns, this class is for you.  If you have never shot a gun, or if you’ve simply let your CCW lapse, and it has been years, and you feel rusty….this class is for you.  If you aren’t even sure you want to pursue your permit, but just want to become familiar with the basics of firearm terminology, safety, and actually taking your first few shots on the range with an instructor……then yep!  This class is definitely for you. Now….hold on….before we get too far into this……GUYS!  you are also Welcome!  Men have all the same feelings, fears, and apprehension that we do!!….but aren’t allowed to show it because hey, YOU ALREADY KNOW ALL ABOUT GUNS….that’s just not true….It’s another Stereotype we need to break!  Men are ALWAYS welcome and encouraged to attend every class…..(Maria won’t pick on you too much!!????)

There is a lot to the classroom instruction, trust me it is NOT BORING, and it is definitely not warm in there!…..you will not fall asleep for any reason.  I found Maria to be very engaging, knowledgeable, and RELATEABLE to all.  She is an excellent speaker, easy to understand, and with the right amount of repetition to take it all in, not to mention quite the comedian at times.  She knows her stuff….her “stuff” in addition to ALL things pertaining to firearms, is EMPOWERING WOMEN.  My biggest takeaway I will not write about in this blog today…..but with a follow up video!  I will leave you in suspense for now!

…………………………………

First things first – You gotta register my friend.  You can do this in person, as I did, or go to www.FemmeFataleArms.com this will take you directly to the class calendar page.  Find the date that works for you and MAKE YOUR MOVE.  If you decide to sign up in person, come to the store and you will have the pleasure of working with Jackie, Jake, ….or of course Richard or Maria….you will love them all.  Jackie assisted me, and took me through my Free Mini lesson….right then and there!  She explained the different sizes of bullets, some pros and cons for each, and had me “rack”…. several different styles of guns to see which felt best to me.  She made note on my signup about which guns I would be interested in shooting at the range.  (if you sign up online you will do this at the range).

………………………………………

Let’s pause for a side note:  when I went home after signing up I told my husband about my experience….he tried not to show it too much, but I know he was THRILLED to hear that I was FINALLY showing an interest in firearms, heavens knows he has made several attempts over the years.  I showed off by saying how I racked several guns, I informed him that I knew that the 9mm bullet guns were the best,  rather than the “point .38 mm bullet guns”.  ????. He said, STOP……NEVER SAY THAT AGAIN…..

huh?  what?  ………………….. so you can see where we’re at.

I told Maria the story, and she said, exactly!!! … at this class you will learn the proper terms, and will know what you are talking about.  Then She said, and guess what……..What?…..did  you know that a .38 is NOT THE SAME AS a 380?  I had to laugh (internally!)….I simply responded NO WAY?!!!  (why and HOW would I know that?) Yep.    Well…..I literally had no idea what she was talking about.  So I was truly excited to learn.

……………………………………….

I did learn, and also have a TON MORE to learn…..but I really enjoyed the format of the class.  Especially the slides with the labeled gun, showing every part of the firearm, and putting the pieces together.  One big shock: I had no idea that “FULL METAL JACKET” = Bullet.  oh my gosh.  Many many nuggets of information…..she went over the proper form of how to hold a gun, the “why” behind holding and racking this precise way, focusing all the time on SAFETY…..she answered all of our questions, and before we knew it the classroom portion was over.

We were a group of 24 (two men who came with their wives….), we were split into 3 groups.  The first group had every thing they needed for the range, (eye and hearing protection, hat) and did not need to stop at the store.  The rest of us stopped at the store first, maybe grabbed a bite to eat, etc.

At the range, when the yellow flag came up, groups were switched out, and we were taken down three at a time to work with our personal instructor.  Time to put into action what we had just learned!  Some had their own guns to work with, most of us did not.

I’m not going to lie….. I was shaking in my booties…..I did in fact forget everything she taught us about form, (she said that might happen) and how to properly hold the gun, etc.  But was soon put at ease by my patient instructor…..(who we will spotlight very soon!!!).   We each shot several times ….it was not a ton, but after each one, some instruction and fine tuning, and a bit of tweaking here, and a bit there…..the shaking subsided, and I was feeling pretty good. (I was a bit surprised to find that I am not the “natural” I had anticipated being…..but I know with practice I will become the “Sure Shot” I envision myself as).  I am definitely anxious to come back for more on the range instruction!!!   Which I have signed up for!!

It was a very positive experience, you will leave feeling much more confident and capable than you did prior to the class, and I would be willing to bet you have a nice handful of new friends with a common interest, and at least one person that will want to continue building on the knowledge, and new skills you have begun to acquire.

OH Yeah!  One more thing! After the range, we stopped back by the store to pick up our signed Training completion CERTIFICATES!!!  (Definitely My favorite picture of the day!)  When I got home I hopped online and scheduled my appointment with the Brevard County Tax Collector to apply for my FL CCW.  Don’t forget this LAST STEP!!!   Finish the mission…….

I hope you found this helpful!

I’ll see you on the range,

Melissa ????
